  5. The following is the most recent general and addendum information
  6. for the Design Essentials product.  It is found in the
  7. 'Readme.txt' file.

  9. This Installation Guide consists of Six sections:
  10. 1. Application Description

  17. SECTION 1 - Application Description
  18. ===================================
  19. The Design Essentials application provides a Template approach 
  20. to document design.  Templates are professionally designed
  21. business brochures, leaflets and reports. Other examples of
  22. Templates are variations of greeting cards and invitations
  23. or menus.
  24.  
  25. There are a variety of Templates on the installation disk.
  26. Templates are an essential component to the application.
  27. Forthcoming are a number of comprehensive and impressive
  28. catalogues of Templates.  
  29.  
  30. ** Please return your registration from so that you can be
  31. ** informed of new Template Catalogues as they become available
  32.

  34. In a typical session with Design Essentials you will:

  36. 1. Select a Template from the many available that best suits 
  37.    your requirement.

  39. 2. Embed your own text and images onto pages in the Template 
  40.    using the current layout as a guide.

  42. 3. Print a high quality color document.

  79. SECTION 3 - Installation Procedure

  82. 1. Installation
  83.    ------------
  84.    Installation is best achieved via the 'Canon Creative' menu.
  85.    This has the advantage of setting up printers and fonts.
  86.  
  87.    Alternatively it is possible to install Design Essentials using
  88.    the following method.  
  89.  
  90.    Close all applications. 
  91.    From the FILE Menu in the Program Manager (Win 3.1x) or from
  92.    the START Menu (Win95) choose Run... and type:
  93.  
  94.    <CD-ROM>:\DESIGNE\SETUP.EXE
  95.  
  96.    Then follow the instructions. (Double clicking on this file
  97.    in File Manager or Explorer has the same effect)

  100. 3. Printer Installation and Configuration
  101.    --------------------------------------
  102.    For the best results we recommend that you install the current
  103.    version of your Canon printer driver that is supplied with
  104.    Canon Creative.
  105.  
  106.    Design Essentials supports Color, Photo Color and Fluorescent
  107.    inks.  It is important to ensure that the 'Print Cartridge'
  108.    setting in the print dialog box matches the currently installed
  109.    ink.

  112.    IMPORTANT:
  113.    ----------
  114.    1. The BJC-610 and BJC-620 "Graphics & Color" and "Quality"
  115.       attributes must be set correctly to get the best looking
  116.       prints.
  117.  
  118.       Refer to the Design Essentials User Guide or the on-line
  119.       help under "Tips and Shortcuts - How to Optimize Printing
  120.       in Design Essentials"
  121.  
  122.    2. To obtain the best results (in particular the correct
  123.       matching of color), the printer setup options need
  124.       to be set correctly. 
  125.  
  126.       The following applies to Canon color printers other than
  127.       the BJC-610 and BJC-620.
  128.  
  129.       When printing using Photo Color ink, you will need to change
  130.       the printer properties. Under the Graphics tab select
  131.       a Color Model of 'Photo Color'. Under the Paper tab select
  132.       'High Resolution Paper' for the media type.
  133.  
  134.       When printing using Color, or Fluorescent ink, you will also
  135.       need to change the printer properties. Under the Graphics
  136.       tab select a Color Model of 'Color'. Under Windows 95 Design
  137.       Essentials can automatically set the rest of the printer
  138.       settings for most Canon printers. However, under Windows
  139.       3.1, you should set the following settings:
  140.  
  141.       a. Media Type             - Plain Paper (even when using
  142.                                   other media)
  143.       b. Print Quality          - Standard
  144.       c. Fine                   - Off
  145.       d. Image Color Matching   - Off
  146.       e. Print Model            - Custom
  147.       f. Option 
  148.             : Color Selection   - Full Color    
  149.             : Half Toning       - Diffusion
  150.             : Color Adjustment  - None
  151.             : Intensity         - Middle (0)

  157.    Print speed can be improved if the Print Manager is disabled.

  164. SECTION 4 - Troubleshooting
  165. ===========================

  168. 1. Design Essentials Stops Displaying or Printing Properly
  169.    -------------------------------------------------------
  170.    Make sure that there is several megabytes of free space on your
  171.    hard disk for temporary swap files.
  172.   
  173. 2. Print Times are Slow or Printing Fails
  174.    --------------------------------------
  175.    There could be a number of reasons for this:
  176.  
  177.    a.  You have other applications open
  178.        --------------------------------
  179.        Close ALL applications except Design Essentials.  Close
  180.        all Design Essentials Browsers and Text Editing windows
  181.        until the print is complete.
  182.  
  183.    b.  The printer SETUP is incorrect
  184.        ------------------------------

  186.        or the on-line help under "Tips and Shortcuts -
  187.        How to Optimize Printing in Design Essentials".

  190.    c. Printing at "High" Quality
  191.       --------------------------
  192.        The Design Essentials print dialog gives a choice of
  193.        quality of printing.  "Normal" is only slightly lower
  194.        in quality to "High", but is much faster and requires less
  195.        memory.  "Normal" quality is recommended for most printing,
  196.        unless using 'Photo Color' ink (when 'High'
  197.        is recommended).

  199. 3. Print Colors are Wrong

  201.    a.  The printer SETUP is incorrect

  211. 4. Problems With Scanning
  212.    ---------------------
  213.    The Design Essentials scanning function requires a TWAIN driver
  214.    for it to work.  This must be installed.  Please refer to your
  215.    scanner documentation for more information regarding the TWAIN
  216.    driver installation.
  217.  
  218.    Scanning problems with Design Essentials can usually
  219.    be attributed to either your interface card or TWAIN driver.
  220.  
  221.    If your scanning device works with another product and not
  222.    Design Essentials then its most likely that the TWAIN driver
  223.    has not been correctly installed or is not compatible.

  227. SECTION 5 - Uninstalling Design Essentials
  228. ==========================================
  229. As part of the installation process an Uninstall program is placed
  230. onto the hard disk and can be located in the Design Essentials
  231. Program Group.  Double clicking the Uninstall icon will start the
  232. uninstallation process.
